The active cell accepts contnet which is typed from the keyboard.
Active cell, steps:
Put the mouse pointer on the cell.
Press the left mouse button.
Dark outline around cell(s) will appear.
That cell is the active cell.
The active cell acceptes containt from the keyboard;

Key TAB change active cell - move to the next cell.
Key ENTER finish enter data into cell and change active cell.
