In the past, a traditional American family consisted of a father, mother and their children. Big families usually had three or more children. Small families usually had a single child, a son or a daughter. The father went to work every day and the mother usually did not go to work. She stayed at home with the children. She took care of them, took them to school and helped them with their homework. In the USA, children usually go to school, but not all children have to go to school. They can also study at home with their parents. In the past, when children got older and finished school, they found jobs and moved away. The families got together around when it was time for holidays — usually at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Family members came from different parts of the country to see each other. This tradition is still the same. Today, the USA is one of the biggest countries in the world, but the traditional American family is very rare. There are more divorces and people spend more time at work. They do not spend much time at home and with each other. Some people think that the quality of life is better when you are single and worse when you are married.
