5.3. My parent’s job
Reading and vocabulary
Every year. Mike’s homeroom teacher, Ms. Bell, organizes a few special lessons when some of the parents come to the school to talk to the children about their jobs. Today, the visitor is Mike’s father. He is a lawyer.
Mike’s father: Good morning children. My name’s John Bradley and I am a lawyer. My job is to help people with legal issues. Sometimes, I only have to prepare important documents for them, but sometimes I must represent them in court, because of some more serious legal issues.
Student: Do you mean crime, Mr. Bradley? Mike’s father: Crime is not the only reason why people have to go to court. But it is one of the reasons.
Student: Mr. Bradley, may I ask you something? Are bullies criminals? How can we get rid of them? We had an incident in the schoolyard a few months ago. You know, when George Rush attacked Mike.
Mike’s father: Yes, I know. And I must say, I am very proud of all of you who helped him. But I am also very proud of Mike because he told us about the incident. The worst thing children can do is to hide problems from parents. It is very important to tell your parents about the things that happen to you at school. We must talk to the other child’s parents, and to the principal and other important people in the school. They must make sure that everybody behaves as the law says.
Teacher: Thank you Mr. Bradley. Are there any other questions , children?
Mike: No further questions, your honour! (they all laugh)
