TASMANIA
The island of Tasmania is Australia's smalleast ans most southerly State, situated some 240 km south of Victoria. the total area of the State is 67 800 sq km,including the islands of Kings Island, the Furneaux and Hunter groups and Macquarie Island approx. 1450 km south-east of Tasmania.    This is the only well-watered State.The stablising effects of the surrounding ocean means that Tasmania enjoyes a pleasant climate. On the coast daily winter temperatures average 8C rising to about 12C further inland. Summers are mild and are characterised by greatly lengthened days of up to 15 hours in midsummer. Temperatures decrease in the mountainous region.      Around Hobart and the east summer days are quite warm and pleasent witjh an average of about 18C and frequently rising to 24C and higher.About 40% of the Tasmanian people live in Hobart and the suroundung suburbs and towns where the poulation is justr over 180 000. Hobart itself is a busy port on the south-east coast with thriving business and commercial sectors and excellent entertainment and tourist facilities. Population: 449 000
