WESTERN AUSTRALIA

   Australias largest State comprising about one third of the total area , 2 525 500 sq km.
   The coastline is 12 500 km long.Temperatures naturally vary over the vast region.Although the south coast tempertures are generally cooler, hot spells are common. The highest temperature ever recorded is 50.7C at Eucla. The inland climate follows a typical desert pattern. Long spells of hot weather in summer where temperatures average 35C are frequent. In winter it is consistently cooler, falling to an average of 11C even though the midday climate is usually sunny and warm.The population of WA is 1459 000 which is only about one-eleventh of the nation's total despite the enormous land area of the State.Most of the people live in the south-west. Perth , the capital, is situated on Swan River, 18 km east of the coast- 1 025 300 people live here and in surrounding suburbs including Fremantle, the port of the city.
